Microdramas, the bite sized serialized videos typically 2–3 minutes per episode, are rapidly redefining digital storytelling. According to new research presented at MIPCOM by Maria Rua Aguete, Head of Media and Entertainment at Omdia, vertical dramas are projected to generate $11 billion in global revenues by 2025.
Unlike traditional television or long form streaming content, microdramas are designed for mobile first audiences. They deliver emotionally engaging stories in just a few minutes per episode, making them perfect for viewers with shorter attention spans but a desire for deep engagement.
“Microdramas combine the immediacy of social media with the emotional depth of television drama,” said Rua Aguete. “They are short, accessible, and increasingly popular among mobile audiences.”
The projected revenue for microdramas is nearly double that of free ad supported streaming television (FAST) channels, which are expected to reach $5.8 billion this year. This highlights the growing commercial potential of short form content that can captivate viewers quickly while maintaining premium storytelling quality.
China currently dominates the microdrama market, accounting for 83% of total revenues, fueled by large audiences and strong mobile viewing habits. Outside China, the United States leads international adoption, followed by Japan, South Korea, the U.K., and Thailand, where microdramas are increasingly gaining traction.
“Viewers are increasingly willing to pay for content that engages them immediately,” Rua Aguete added. “While attention spans are shorter, engagement levels are deeper, and that’s what makes this format so commercially effective.”
Microdramas prove that premium storytelling doesn’t require long form episodes. By delivering quick, impactful narratives, they capture audience attention in a crowded digital landscape. For creators and distributors, this format offers a unique opportunity to monetize content and reach mobile first audiences around the globe.
As short form content continues to dominate digital platforms, microdramas are set to become a cornerstone of the future of entertainment, merging the immediacy of social media with the emotional resonance of traditional drama.

If you think writing a microdrama is the same as writing a movie or TV episode, it’s time to level up your game.
